چکیده

In the large helical device (LHD), direct oblique launching of the extraordinary (X-) mode from the high magnetic field side is available without installation of any additional mirror or installation of a launcher in the inner side of the torus. The launched X-mode first encounters the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) layer from the high magnetic field side and then approaches the upper hybrid resonance (UHR) layer where mode conversion from the X-mode to electron Bernstein wave (EBW) occurs. Complete power absorption with a finite parallel component of the refractive index is promising whether the launched wave power is absorbed as the electromagnetic X-mode or is absorbed as electrostatic EBW even in the peripheral region. In the experiment, strong power absorption has been observed by direct oblique launching of the X-mode. Observation of the parametric decay wave suggests a fraction of the launched power reached the UHR layer that is located near the plasma boundary. The result of numerical analysis with three dimensional ray-tracing calculation using the dispersion equation in hot plasmas suggests that the launched X-mode is refracted toward the magnetic axis and strongly absorbed very close to the ECR layer that is located around ρ~0.5. The main part of the launched power is absorbed as the X-mode in the ECR layer where the electron temperature is sufficient high, while a fraction of the power reaches the UHR that is located in almost the plasma boundary.

Magnetically confined plasma can be heated with high power microwave sources. In spherical torus the electron plasma frequency exeeds the electron cyclotron frequency (EC) and, as a consequence, electromagnetic waves at fundamental and low harmonic EC cannot propagate within the plasma. In contrast, electron Bernstein waves (EBWs) readily propagate in spherical torus plasma and are absorbed str...

Demonstration of Electron-Bernstein-Wave Heating in a Tokamak via O-X-B Double-Mode Conversion

The first demonstration of electron-Bernstein-wave heating by double-mode conversion from the O to the X mode in an overdense H-mode tokamak plasma has been achieved in the Tokamak à Configuration Variable device. This technique overcomes the upper density limit experienced by conventional microwave heating. The sensitive dependence of the O-X mode conversion on the microwave launching directio...

Electron Bernstein Wave Heating and Emission in the TCV Tokamak

Electron cyclotron heating of high density plasmas is limited due to so-called wave cut-offs. The double mode conversion scheme from O-mode to X-mode and finally to Bernstein mode O-X-B offers the possibility to overcome this limit [1]-[4]. At a particular launching angle, an O-mode wave converts to X-mode at the plasma cut-off. The power transmission function T from Oto X-mode was derived in [...

Heating by an electron Bernstein wave in a spherical tokamak plasma via mode conversion.

The first successful high power heating of a high dielectric constant spherical tokamak plasma by an electron Bernstein wave (EBW) is reported. An EBW was excited by mode conversion (MC) of an mode cyclotron wave injected from the low magnetic field side of the TST-2 spherical tokamak. Evidence of electron heating was observed as increases in the stored energy and soft x-ray emission. The incre...

Plasma heating due to X-B mode conversion in a cylindrical ECR plasma system

Extra Ordinary (X) mode conversion to Bernstein wave near Upper Hybrid Resonance (UHR) layer plays an important role in plasma heating through cyclotron resonance. Wave generation at UHR and parametric decay at high power has been observed during Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) heating experiments in toroidal magnetic fusion devices. A small linear system with ECR and UHR layer within the sy...
